Jaisalmer Fort
One of the few forts in the world people still live inside — yellow sandstone that turns gold at sundown.
HeritageJaisalmer FortSonar Quila — the Golden Fort — rises straight out of the Thar, and unlike most forts of its age, it never emptied out. Several thousand people still live within its walls.
The draw
Why go
- It is a living fort, not a monument behind a rope: homes, temples, shops, and havelis share the same lanes they have for centuries.
- The sandstone shifts colour through the day and reaches a deep honey-gold at sunset, which is when most first-time visitors remember it from.
Before you go
Good to know
- The lanes are narrow and stepped — comfortable shoes help.
- Mornings are quietest; late afternoon into sunset is the light most people come for.
