What to pack for one night in the Thar

The short list that actually matters — and the things people bring but never use.

10 June 2026·Explore Overnight Desert Camp Jaisalmer

You are spending one night in the desert. The camp has a bed, a bathroom, running hot water, and blankets. Start from that, not from a week-long expedition checklist.

What actually matters

A warm layer for after sunset. Desert temperatures drop fast once the sun is gone. A hoodie, a light fleece, or a shawl — something you can throw on over whatever you wore during the day. December and January nights can drop below 10 °C, so a proper jacket is justified those months.

Closed shoes you do not mind getting sandy. The camel safari and any dune walking involve loose sand. Sandals work until they do not. Trainers or desert boots are simpler.

Sunscreen and a hat or scarf. Afternoon sun in the Thar is strong, and the camel safari starts before sunset while the light is still direct.

A phone charger. The tents have power. Your phone camera is almost certainly good enough for the sunset and the stars — most of the best guest photos on the wall were taken on phones.

Medication you rely on. The camp is forty-five kilometres from the nearest pharmacy.

What people bring but never use

  • Heavy luggage. You are here for one night. A backpack or a small bag is enough.
  • Mosquito repellent. The open desert has very few — this is not the jungle.
  • Binoculars. Nice to have, but naked-eye stargazing at Khuri is already extraordinary without them.
  • A tripod. Unless you are a serious astrophotographer, a phone braced on a flat surface will do for night shots.
  • Multiple outfits. You will wear one thing all evening. Bring a change for the next morning and that is sufficient.

What to leave at your Jaisalmer hotel

If you are staying in the city before or after the camp night, leave your main luggage at the hotel. Bring only what you need for the overnight. The drive out is about an hour, and carrying less makes the arrival feel like an arrival, not a transfer.

One thing worth adding

A portable battery pack, if you plan to photograph or film through the evening. Between the sunset, the cultural performance, the fire show, and the stars, phones can run low by the time the sky is at its best.
